Jon Favreau, the writer and executive producer for Disney+’s live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian, has put together an odd assortment of actors for the show’s cast. And no, we’re not talking about former Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell) in the titular role — that was perfect casting. It’s actors like Carl Weathers, Nick Nolte, and quirky documentary filmmaker/part-time actor Werner Herzog who have caught our attention.
Speaking to IndieWire about his new movie, Meeting Gorbachev, Herzog dropped a little tidbit about his role in The Mandalorian. When asked about his acting, Herzog said: “Now this is not a secret anymore, a small part, real small part, in The Mandalorian, the Star Wars sequel or whatever you call it. I like to do it because I know I’m good on screen, but only if I have to play a real villain.”

First of all, can we all take a moment to appreciate that Werner Herzog isn’t even sure what type of series The Mandalorian is? I guess you could call it a sequel, but it’s also a prequel — it’s set after The Last Jedi and before The Force Awakens. Mostly it just sounds like he’s too cool to be bothered by the details and I totally dig it. He’s got documentaries about Gorbachev to make.

Anyway, now we know Herzog is playing a villain in The Mandalorian and that it’s a “real small part,” which probably means he’ll be on screen for a few minutes and then get disintegrated by Pascal’s character.
In other Star Wars news, Stephen Colbert tried to get Keri Russell to divulge secrets about her role in Episode IX. He was thwarted:
The Mandalorian will hit Disney+ when it goes live later this year. Episode IX is out in theaters December 20.
