The more we see of Netflix’s adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels, the better idea we have of what kind of show it’s going to be. And according to this latest behind-the-scenes video, it’s going to be lavish. Check out a quick clip of the crew loading in to the stately Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest, Hungary:
"A little video from yesterday’s filming at the castle. Some pics from the interior coming later. from netflixwitcher"
Vajdahunyad Castle was built in 1896 and will fit perfectly into The Witcher’s medieval-but-not-too-medieval fantasy milieu. There’s no shortage of castles and the keeps in The Witcher books, so I’ll leave to bigger fans than I to guess what Vajdahunyad Castle could stand in for:
It looks like Netflix will offer us some geographic variation with this show. In addition to its stay in Hungary, it’s also filmed heavily on the Spanish Canary Islands, in both woody and rocky areas. (For those who have read the books, it’s starting to look like the first season of the show will adapt “The Bounds of Reason” from The Sword of Destiny, where Geralt, Yennefer, and a lot of other characters go looking for a dragon all for their own reasons.)

The Witcher has a name of a lead man in Henry Cavill, who’s playing the titular Witcher Geralt, a monster hunter who must navigate a medieval fantasy world “where people often prove more wicked than beasts,” per Netflix’s official description. Will it be enough to stand up to the bloom of fantasy series springing up in the wake of Game of Thrones? Hopefully we’ll know later this year.
