Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi promises an “intense” season 8 score

Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi is responsible for all the beautiful, haunting, and exciting melodies we’ve to come to associate with the series. It’s mind-boggling to think that many do not recognize his name but instantly recognize his music. This anonymity will not last long, considering how amazing his work is.

Speaking to Variety, Djawadi promises the score for season 8 will be “intense and more epic than ever.” There will be a mix of some new stuff along with some old themes that we’ve heard before.

Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss sought out Djawadi back in 2011. At the time, he had worked alongside Hans Zimmer, but had never really created anything under his own name. The craziest part? After the first screening of Game of Thrones, Djawadi came up with the infamous theme music on his drive home. “The intent was always to set up the mood, the mystery, the adventure, the journey and all that entails,” he said. “The cello, expressive but dark, just nailed the tone.” That music has been tweaked a little here and there, but it’s still the same recording made back during the first season.

In the years he has worked on Game of Thrones, Djawadi has created music for all the royal families, individual characters, and even specific locations.

"It started out intentionally small, but as the story expanded, the dragons arrived, the battles grew, the drama got bigger and bigger, the music had to grow with it. We added bigger orchestras, more choir, more instrumentation all around."

For the final season, there will be “a 60-piece orchestra, a 40-voice mixed chorus, and a 12-voice children’s choir.” Creating music on this grand scale isn’t easy, but luckily for Djawadi, the showrunners always gave him direction and guidance. “They are always very clear about the direction we’re heading in, so I know what I can set up musically.”

Working on Game of Thrones has changed Djawadi’s life. He’s won awards, worked on other critically-acclaimed shows like Westworld, and become the type of composer he always wanted to be.

To expose the music from the series to a wider audience, Djawadi has gone on three tours where he plays the score to a grand backdrop of Game of Thrones scenes. And while he has created hours of amazing music over the course of eight seasons, Djawadi does have a few pieces that are near and dear to his heart. They include:

  • The main title theme
  • “Mhysa”
  • “The Rains of Castamere”
  • “Light of the Seven”
  •  Love Theme for Jon and Daenerys

Keep your ears peeled for more of Djawadi’s work on April 14.
