First edition Harry Potter book with misspelled title sells for $90,000

For hardcore fans, Harry Potter makes the world go round. According to The Independent, a first edition Harry Potter book sold for £70,000 (around $90,000). Why so much? Well, it was extremely rare because it was one of 500 that was published back in 1997 with the title misspelled:

"Harry Potter and the Philospher’s Stone"

It’s a bit funny that someone would drop so much for a book that has a mistake right on the cover. And if you thought the misspelled title was interesting, you’ll love this next one. Author J.K. Rowling signed this particular book on the copyright page, but she wrote it as, “Joanne Rowling.”

The auction house, Bonhams, located in London, didn’t anticipate that the book would sell for as much as it did, although they were still estimating it would go for around $50,000-$78,000, which is hardly small. Per UPI, the head of books and manuscripts at Bonhams, Matthew Haley, was impressed with the book’s condition:

"Like most enduring books aimed at younger readers, the Harry Potter books also have wide appeal to adults and there is a strong market among collectors for first editions. This copy is in excellent condition — one of the very best I’ve seen."

This Harry Potter book is just one of many that have sold at such insanely high prices. But want to hear about the most crazily priced item? The chair that J.K. Rowling sat on while writing two of the books sold for a whopping $400,000 back in 2009, according to a 2016 report by BBC News.

So while Harry Potter fans are clearly among the most passionate in the world, it can go the other way. According to Time, a Polish priest named Rev. Rafal Jarosiewicz has apologized for leading a public book burning that included books from the Harry Potter series, saying that the ritual was “not intended to condemn specific authors, religions or social groups.” He doesn’t realize that there is an entire fandom gritting their teeth at him at this very moment.
