4. The Night’s Watch is Lightbringer, the prophecy fulfilled

As we approach the ending of Game of Thrones, there’s a whole lot of talk about the Prince That Was Promised, aka Azor Ahai, a messianic figure destined to save humanity from a great darkness. Melisandre hasn’t been able to shut up about the prophecy for a couple seasons now, and many fans have theories as to who it could be, with the most popular choices being Daenerys Targaryen or Jon Snow. But what if there’s a less obvious candidate?

Okay, so part of the Azor Ahai prophecy involves a magical sword (there’s always a magical sword) called Lightbringer, which will presumably be used to smite the enemies of life. This has led dedicated to pay special attention to this part of the Night’s Watch oath:

"I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn."

One theorist suggests that you think of the Azor Ahai prophecy like a game of telephone. Parts get muddled as they are passed down over time, and their actual meaning may not be as direct as we think.

The connection between the two is pretty loose, but it would be a pleasant surprise if the Night’s Watch swooped in at the last minute to fulfill the prophecy and take out the White Walkers, rather than simply going the more obvious route and pushing Jon Snow forward as their representative. But honestly, for all the play the prophecy gets among fan theories, we’ll not sure it will play a big role in the endgame for the show.
