Disney CEO: Star Wars will take “a bit of a hiatus” after Episode IX

The 2019 Star Wars Celebration is happening right now in Chicago, Illinois, and thousands of ravenous Star Wars fans are clamoring for news about their favorite franchise. Have you watched the new trailer for Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker? Best do that:

Episode IX hits theaters this December, but what about after that? Disney CEO Bon Iger told Bloomberg that Disney will “take a pause, some time, and reset because the Skywalker saga comes to an end with this ninth movie. There will be other Stars Wars movies, but there will be a bit of a hiatus.”

Just how long will the hiatus be? “We have not announced any specific plans for movies thereafter. There are movies in development, but we have not announced them.”

Perhaps it’s a good thing Disney is pulling back on its Star Wars franchise a bit. Solo: A Star Wars Story was the lowest grossing film in the franchise’s 40-year history, and even franchise mainstays like Mark Hamill are wondering if audiences are suffering from Star Wars fatigue.

Still, Iger isn’t kidding about other Star Wars movies being in development. Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are making a new trilogy, as is The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson. But when will we see them? It’s anybody’s guess.
