7. BATTLE ON THE NARROW SEA (“Stormborn,” Episode 702)

Major Players: Theon Greyjoy, Yara Greyjoy, Euron Greyjoy, Ellaria Sand, Tyene Sand, Obara Sand, Nymeria Sand

Deaths: Obara Sand, Nymeria Sand

Battle: As Theon and Yara Greyjoy make their way to Dorne with those members of the Iron Fleet still loyal to them, they are ambushed by Euron Greyjoy and those who aren’t. Euron rams Yara’s flagship with his ship the Silence and leads the boarding party attack. The Sand Snakes fight bravely but Euron kills Obara and Nymeria and takes both Ellaria and Tyene prisoner.

Yara and Euron fight and he overwhelms her. Theon tries to come to his sister’s rescue but the sight of sailors being tortured triggers his memories of being Reek and he jumps overboard, clinging to debris as Euron sails away with Yara and their fleet burns.

Importance: The defeat of Yara’s Ironborn fleet is a setback for Daenerys but it doesn’t prove to be a profound one. Yara’s capture sets Theon on his quest of transformation as he seeks to save his sister.

Cinematics: Thrones loves fire at night, and this ship-to-ship battle is no exception. The fanatic energy of the ember-swirling sequence matches Euron’s maniacal blood lust; he’s always fun to watch. It’s nice to finally see the Sand Snakes, part of the chronically underdeveloped Dorne storyline, get a chance to really mix it up, but it’s too little too late.

Quote: “Come on, you c**kless coward. I have her. Come and get her.” (Euron Greyjoy, to Theon)
