Fashion is Coming: The costumes of “Winterfell”
Cersei’s black dress
Although the Northerners are known for their darker attire, they aren’t the only ones rocking the all-black look in”Winterfell.” Cersei’s dress while she greets Euron Greyjoy and the Golden Company is dark and sleek, a fitting look for a queen who’s still mourning the figurative loss of her twin brother, not to mention her children and her father. In some ways, Cersei has never stopped mourning.
Although the outfit is sleek and shows off Cersei’s feminine qualities, it also covers her entirely and even has embellishments on the shoulders that look almost like armor. Cersei’s dress makes it look like she’s ready for war—and clearly she is—but just because her clothing serves as a defensive layer, it doesn’t completely negate her femininity. That’s important because it shows that Cersei is still willing to utilize those qualities to maintain her hold on power if necessary. And, as we see through her interaction with Euron, even though Cersei is reluctant to drop her defenses, she does just that, using her sexuality to keep the Iron Fleet around.
At present, Cersei is the only serious contender for the Iron Throne who actually wears a crown. While Daenerys and Jon are both looking north, Cersei is more interested in maintaining her hold on King’s Landing. She’s the only one left squabbling over the Iron Throne, so it makes sense that she’d wear a crown that symbolizes her authority as queen, even if that authority won’t mean much should the army of the dead come calling.
