Episode 403: “The Bad News Bear”

Uh oh, evil-Eliot has found Marina’s apartment, and he’s ready to murder all our favorite magicians because they tried to kill him way back in the season 3 finale. However, Marina has a safeguard capable of stopping a god. She tells Margo where it is. It’s called Ambrosia and it affects gods like meth affects people.

However, when Margo sees evil-Eliot, she hesitates because she doesn’t want the evil spirit inside Eliot to do some kind of permanent damage to him, and reveals the safeguard in order to gain his trust. She also tells him she knows where Bacchus is, and that she and Josh can take him to the god of wine and all-night raves.

In the library, Alice and Santa escape their cells and go to retrieve their books. You see, the library has books on everyone who ever lived…ever. And if they don’t take their books with them, the librarians can just look in there to see where they’re hiding. Santa finds his book and scoots up a chimney. Looks like Christmas is back on the books, y’all! However, Alice can’t find her book, nor the books of her friends. She stays behind.

Back on Earth, Marina explains she’s working for the Order for three “Deweys,” coins embued with magic. The magicians tell Marina they can get her more if she helps them, and she agrees.

Penny dials up an old friend of his who uses luck magic to get whatever he wants in life; he’s a professional forger who can create the magical equivalent of a black card that has unlimited “Dewey” magic loaded on it. They hatch a plan to create a fake, but someone has to hold onto the unlucky stuffed bear because Penny’s friend has to unload all the bad luck into an item.

Luck-related hijinks ensue. First Quentin can’t eat soup because the spoon falls in the bowl or the soup spills all over him. Then a snake comes out of a toilet and tries to kill him, then he gets a paper cut from a paper towel. The bad luck bear is bad.

In Fillory, Josh and Margo lead evil-Eliot to where Bacchus is partying down as Ember, and Josh laces his drink with the ambrosia. Josh and Bacchus used to be friends and Josh feels awful about betraying him, but he and his friends on Earth will be murdered by evil-Eliot if he doesn’t act.

Evil-Eliot drags unconscious Bacchus out to the woods and cuts him open, pulling out some kind of weird sack that burns Margo’s fairy eye (she got the fairy eye after she helped the Queen of the fairies in season 3).

Finally, the magicians give Marina the promised five Deweys they owed her, only something is off. As she’s looking them over, a stranger comes up behind her and she looks shocked. You see, earlier, Kady was supposed to dispose of the fake magic black card used to cast protection wards on each of them, as well as the bad luck bear, but she cast a spell on each item.

When everyone gathers in Marina’s apartment again, they ask where Marina went, and Kady tells them the apartment is now hers. She’s ready to cast a cloaking spell on each of them so they’ll be safe.

Now I’m wondering what happened to poor Marina…

Anyway, this was another great episode of The Magicians. There are real consequences to using magic and our heroes are beginning to feel them. Also, I liked the bit where Quentin has to play a magical card game called Push, where a magician uses magic to win as many hands as they can. That’s straight from the books, and just like in the novels, Quentin wins.
