Doctor Who news: Captain Jack Harkness is….the Sixth Doctor?!?

Captain Jack is back in a brand new box Doctor Who spin-off box set from Big Finish! But what’s he doing wearing the Sixth Doctor’s coat?

Well, Big Finish have certainly kept this quiet! Two years ago, they released a charming little anthology series called The Lives of Captain Jack. Set at various points across the life of Captain Jack Harkness, the series explored some of the key gaps in his story, both in Doctor Who and in Torchwood.

Unsurprisingly, the box set had something of a nice balance between the very different tones of the two series. One thing that probably helped is that it was written by both James Goss and Guy Adams – two veteran audio writers for both series. Overall, the box set had been a strong one, so I was surprised when it looked like there wouldn’t be another series coming any time soon.

Well today, that completely changes. Big Finish have not only announced that series two of The Lives of Captain Jack is coming next month, which has to be one of the shortest time frames between an announcement and a release from them that I’ve seen yet.

But the biggest surprise has to be what Captain Jack is wearing this time: the Sixth Doctor’s costume. Captain Jack in the most colorful coat ever made? This is the greatest thing that Big Finish has ever given us! (I’m just surprised that the title they went with for this episode is Piece of Mind rather than Jack and the Technicolor Dreamcoat.)

Driving Miss Wells by James GossAlien invasions, stolen planets and burning skies – Newsreader Trinity Wells used to tell everyone the world was ending. One day she stopped believing it. Will her new chauffeur change her mind?"

So in this series’s opening episode, Captain Jack will meet the Sixth Doctor, as played by Colin Baker. How, and why won’t the Doctor remember this meeting later on in his Ninth self?

I’m sure these questions will be answered. The description for the episode certainly sounds intriguing though, especially the idea of Jack taking on the Doctor’s role. And I can’t wait to hear John Barrowman’s Captain Jack meeting Colin Baker’s Doctor! I think we’re going to get a lot of great banter from these two.

Another major draw for this box set has to be the return of Trinity Wells. For those of you who don’t remember, for every major event on modern day Earth during Russell T Davies’s run, she was the American newsreader. She only appeared briefly, but she was a key face from that era, and I must admit, it’ll be intriguing to see what happens when her character is finally given a major role in a story.

The Lives of Captain Jack Volume Two is out in June, and you can purchase it on CD or download from Big Finish’s website.
