Beric’s flaming sword

“The Long Night” makes a point of showing Beric fighting with his flaming sword, and even pulling out a few tricks we hadn’t seen before, like him tossing it at a wight who’s going after Arya. That’s likely because the episode wanted to emphasize Beric’s connection with the Lord of Light, who has brought him back from the dead on more than one occasion. And during the Battle of Winterfell, viewers finally find out why.

Beric’s ultimate purpose was to save Arya so that she could save everyone else, or at least that’s Melisandre’s take on the situation. Almost immediately after Beric rescues Arya from the wights attacking her, Beric falls victim to those same wights.

And Beric’s sword seems so prominent throughout the episode as a reminder to fans that he’s been chosen by the Red God for some greater purpose. When the sword’s fire goes out, so does Beric’s, this time for good.
