Uh oh: Clip of Will Smith singing “Prince Ali” does not bode well for the Aladdin movie

Disney has had huge success making live-action remakes of its classic animated movies. Beauty and the Beast made all the money at the box office, people are excited about the upcoming Lion King movie, etc.

But from the start, Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin, due out on May 24, has had a rockier path. People didn’t quite know what to make of an all-blue Will Smith as the Genie, although he won’t look like that the whole movie. Now, Disney has released a clip of Smith performing the song “Prince Ali,” a high-energy number where Aladdin, disguised as a prince, makes his grand entrance into the city of Agrabah. It’s…well, just watch:

Woof. Those are some bland, flattened-out vocals. Will Smith has a background in music, so I have to believe he’s capable of summoning more energy than this. It pales especially in comparison to the original Robin Williams rendition, which was jam-packed with personality:

It’s probably too much to hope that Smith can generate the same excitement as Williams, but this is not gonna cut it.

But if Aladdin doesn’t work out, Disney has no shortage of animated adaptations coming up. Below, check out the trailer for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the studio’s follow-up to 2014’s Maleficent, about the story behind the iconic Sleeping Beauty villain:

So this isn’t exactly an adaptation of one Disney’s old movies — I’m not quite sure where along Maleficent’s timeline it falls — but I do like that Angelina Jolie is bringing some attitude and gravitas to her performance. I mean, her cheekbones alone…

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil hits theaters on October 18.

Finally, on the TV side of things, Netflix has dropped a trailer for the fifth season of Black Mirror, its thrilling sci-fi anthology series:

Anthony Mackie,  Miley Cyrus, Topher Grace…this season is attracting some big names. The new season drops June 5.
