Tyrion’s Hand of the Queen pin

In an earlier Fashion is Coming post, we pointed out that Tyrion’s Hand of the Queen pin appears purposefully placed to stand out this season. But while highlighting Tyrion’s pin in earlier episodes underscored the tensions between him and his queen, doing so in “The Bells” seems to emphasize the irony of Tyrion’s loyalty to Daenerys. It’s clear that even Tyrion has been questioning Daenerys’ decisions as of late. Still, up until the second half of “The Bells,” Tyrion insists that he has faith in her.

Despite Varys’ warnings at the beginning of the episode, Tyrion makes the choice to remain loyal to his queen leading up to their assault on King’s Landing. Not only does he reveal the Spider’s treason to her, but he places his trust in her—trust that she’ll be merciful to the city’s residents in the event of a surrender. Of course, that trust turns out to be severely misplaced.

If Tyrion was having second thoughts about Daenerys’ reign before “The Bells,” those thoughts are definitely at the forefront of his mind as he walks through the remains of King’s Landing. It’s likely those thoughts will turn to action in the finale, with Tyrion making a last-ditch attempt to save Westeros from the Dragon Queen—if she doesn’t roast him for freeing Jaime first. We’re also likely to see the Hand of the Queen pin removed from Tyrion’s outfit. Truthfully, it’s surprising he hasn’t taken it off already.
