Fashion is Coming: Examining the costumes of “The Bells”
The Mountain’s helmet
Ser Gregor Clegane, aka the Mountain, has been one of the most formidable fighters on Game of Thrones since well before Qyburn turned him into a zombie-like monster. And after Qyburn’s experiments, the Mountain has been nearly unstoppable, something that’s proven by the Hound’s many attempts to kill him during “The Bells.” When even a knife through the brain doesn’t work, you know you’re in trouble.
And “The Bells” is the first time fans get a clear look at what’s beneath the Mountain’s helmet since Qyburn turned him into something inhuman. For several seasons now, the helmet has served the purpose of building suspense for viewers. With only red eyes and a bit of discolored skin visible beneath it, fans were left to assume the worst about the Mountain’s appearance. And although it definitely isn’t pretty when his helmet comes flying off during Cleganebowl, it’s also a bit underwhelming.
But that might be the point. When the Mountain reveals his scarred, disfigured face to the Hound, the latter responds with, “Yeah, that’s you. That’s what you’ve always been.” The humans on Game of Thrones have always been worse than the monsters. In the end, turning the Mountain into a monster made no difference; he already was one.
