Arya’s ash-covered hair and clothes

Arya looks an absolute mess during the latter half of “The Bells,” but that’s probably inevitable after an entire city more or less collapses on top of you. The younger Stark sister picked a bad day to arrive in King’s Landing, especially since she didn’t get her revenge on Cersei. But Arya’s presence in the city does give viewers a firsthand look at the terror and destruction Daenerys causes.

And the state of her costume highlights just how bad things are on the ground. Her usual clothing is covered in ash and dust from fallen buildings, as is her hair. She’s also got blood smeared all over her face, a result of being trampled and smacked with falling debris. Seeing one of the series’ toughest characters so worn down is a testament to how devastating Daenerys’ attack truly is, and it hits fans exactly as it’s meant to.
