The penultimate episode of Game of Thrones, “The Bells” delivered plenty of twists and turns. You can take a closer look at how it all came together on HBO’s Making Game of Thrones blog, which spotlights the concept art, storyboards, and outfits and weapons used in the episode.
First up, HBO shows off the outfit worn by the Mother of Dragons as she turned King’s Landing to ash:
I love how costume designer Michele Clapton has taken Dany’s fur-lined white-and-grey costumes from her trip north and incorporated badass dragon-scale patterned leather, all in the red and black colors of House Targaryen. Even the three-headed dragon clasp and chain are tarnished or darkened.
Next, we’ve got some amazing concept art of Daenerys and Drogon approaching the Red Keep…
…and then burning it to the ground.
If you listen closely, you hear the Hound yell “CLEGANEBOWL GET HYYYYYYYPPPEEEE!” as he tackled his brother through the crumbling wall and into the fire below.

Speaking of Sandor and Gregor’s brotherly tussle, let’s take a look at the storyboards for that sequence, starting with the moment the Mountain bashes Qyburn’s brains out:
Good lord, I do believe he knocked his block off.
Here’s something interesting: in the storyboard, the Mountain has hair, and looks more like a walker from The Walking Dead than what showed up onscreen:
Gnarly.
Robert Ball’s Beautiful Death illustration for this episode is also about the brothers Clegane:
