Sophie Turner explains why Sansa didn’t want the Iron Throne

Sophie Turner is completely content with how Sansa Stark’s story ended in the Game of Thrones series finale. “I wasn’t bummed at all,” she told Entertainment Weekly. Neither was I, Sophie. Over the past few seasons, it became increasingly clear that Sansa belonged in the North. It’s where she thrives, so it came as no surprise that the series ended with her taking over Winterfell as Queen of the North, with her ruling over an independent kingdom.

Our girl got what she wanted, and her final moments on screen rocking that weirwood dress are big time goals.

While Sansa Stark was a fan-favorite contender for the Iron Throne, Turner explained why that was never what Sansa wanted for herself:

"Because ever since the end of season 1, Sansa has not been about the capital or being queen. She doesn’t believe she could rule and doesn’t want to. She knows her place is in the North and she can rule the people of the North and rule Winterfell. She’d probably be capable [of being queen of the Seven Kingdoms] with the help of her family and advisors like Tyrion. But she has no desire to be ruler of all of the Seven Kingdoms."

Sure, the young Sansa Stark dreamt of marrying Joffrey and living out her days by his side, but it became very clear very quickly that it was not her destiny. Who else still cringes at season 1 Sansa swooning and pining over Prince Joffrey?

After all was said and done, Sansa took her rightful place in Winterfell, taking on the responsibilities she’d been working toward. And I have no doubt that Sansa Stark, Queen of the North, will kick ass at ruling her dominion. Kudos to Sophie Turner for bringing life to such a phenomenal character that we will sorely miss.

All hail, the Queen of the North!
