David Lynch drew a creepy charcoal map of Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks may not have the cultural cache it once did, back in the very early ’90s when the whole country was trying to solve the mystery of who killed Laura Palmer and why the show included a backwards-talking dwarf, but a lot of today’s prestige TV owes a debt to director David Lynch’s bizarre ABC drama. Twin Peaks proved that shows could be offbeat, well-produced, heavily serialized, dense with lore, and wildly successful. Twin Peaks is a far cry from something like Game of Thrones, but the shows are united by their bold visions and trust in the audience, and I honestly don’t think the latter happens without the former paving the way.

So that’s my ode to Twin Peaks. I bring it up because star Kyle Kyle MacLachlan recently posted a neat bit of Peaks history on his Instagram account: a map of the sleepy northwestern logging town drawn by Lynch to help reorient the cast members when they came back 25 damn years after the conclusion of the original series to film Twin Peaks: The Return for Showtime.

When he’s not directing movies, Lynch is a painter, and this creepy charcoal rub is very much in keeping with his other work. There’s definitely something very Twin Peaks about it; it’s simple but eerie, stark and evocative. Fans will recognize places like the Ghostwood National Forest and Black Lake, on the other side of which is the local brothel and casino, One Eyed Jack’s. The twin peaks of Twin Peaks are present, and that building above Meadow Lark Hill is probably the Great Northern Hotel.

I’m a Twin Peaks fan from way back, and although I found The Return pretty impenetrable at times, it might be worth a second look. I’ll bring a map this time.
