Fashion is Coming: Examining the costumes of “The Iron Throne”
Brienne’s golden armor
In “The Iron Throne,” Brienne sees a serious upgrade to her usual armor thanks to her new position as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. It’s fitting that Brienne would wind up in this role, especially given that it once belonged to Jaime.
It’s also fitting that she should wear golden armor. For starters, it symbolizes just how far Brienne has risen in Westerosi society. She goes from being a woman ridiculed for rejecting feminine qualities to becoming a knight in everything but title. Then, in “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” she’s knighted legitimately, and now she’s the leader of the king’s personal guard. It’s been a long journey for Brienne, but a successful one, and she has the attire to prove it.
It’s also no coincidence that she’s wearing gold, one of the prominent colors of House Lannister, while she writes Jaime’s story in the Book of Brothers. The two characters have had major impacts on one another over the course of the series, and it’s because of Jaime that Brienne is officially a knight in the first place. The color of her armor isn’t just a requirement of the kingsguard; it’s also a callback to Jaime’s influence on her own story, and a powerful one at that.
