Valar Morghulis: We look back at the deaths of Game of Thrones season 8
By Corey Smith
It’s time for the the Death Awards, where every award is accepted in absentia.
Most Heroic Death: Jorah Mormont
This was a tough call, but the nod goes to Ser Jorah Mormont. Theon might have gone out like a boss, charging the show’s most powerful villain, but Jorah straight refused to die until Daenerys was out of danger. Jorah’s love for Dany powered him well beyond the might of any other man, and we salute the old bear for his sacrifice.
Least Heroic Death: Harry Strickland
We’d been told about how impressive the Golden Company was, so to watch them line up outside King’s Landing and immediately get blasted into oblivion was a pretty big let-down. Strickland went from a poor man’s Jaime Lannister to getting stabbed in the back while scurrying away in just a few seconds.
Most Shocking Death: Daenerys Targaryen
After the events of “The Bells,” Daenerys’ death was not at all shocking, but before the season began, she was barely on my radar. Watching Dany go from a Hero of Winterfell to the Butcher of King’s Landing in three short episodes was incredibly shocking.
Most Shocking Survival: Jon Snow
Again, my impression was wrong, but something told me the “bittersweet” ending of the series would involve Jon dying, not from some huge battle, but as a result of him basically being already undead. What could be more bittersweet than our hero surviving the conflict only to slowly waste away?
Most Unintentionally Hilarious Death: Qyburn
Poor Qyburn got smashed like a rotten pumpkin by his creation the FrankenMountain. Watching Cersei tip-toe past the two Clegane brothers afterwards only added to the hilarity.
Most Likely to Die after the Series: Arya Stark
Okay, before you grab your pitchforks, just consider that no one has ever returned from sailing west of Westeros. Even Starks have attempted it before never to be seen from again. It’s hard to bet against Arya, but her assassin and survival skills don’t mean much on the open seas.
Most Likely to Die of Old Age: Bran Stark
Extremely old age is more like it. We’re not sure if everyone who elected Bran king was aware, but the last Three-Eyed Raven lived to be well over a hundred and even then only seemed to die when he was ready. Bran the Broken ain’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Episode the God of Death Liked Best: “The Bells”
“The Long Night” might have had plenty of death, but between Daenerys’ burning first the Iron Fleet and then King’s Landing, which we know had a population of around a million, “The Bells” left a more lasting impression. Plus, there were a larger number of important named characters who bit it. “The Bells” surely had the God of Death grinning.
