Game of Thrones went to insane lengths to prevent spoilers this season

HBO took spoilers extremely seriously during Game of Thrones season 8, and indeed, very little got out before the episodes themselves were sent off to affiliates and outside parties could take a look. In The Last Watch, we see some of the measures that were taken.

For example, on the last slide, we saw that Vladimir Furdik was in Seville, where the show filmed the scene at the Dragonpit in “The Iron Throne.” Obviously, the Night King wasn’t in that scene, so why was Furdik in the area at all? Purely for misdirection. The show didn’t want any spoiler-hounds getting wind of what was being filmed, so it shipped in Furdik to throw them off the scent. That’s also why Kit Harington was there, even though he wasn’t in the scene.

HBO also brought back former cast members Tom Wlaschiha (Jaqen H’ghar) and Faye Marsay (the Waif) to throw people off. Not only that, it actually put them in costume!

Security was especially tight around Titanic Studios in Belfast, where the bulk of filming is done. The scripts were shredded after the table read, of course, and there’s a fun moment where a security guard has to talk a curious passerby away from the area. But no plan is full-proof, as when a ferris wheel is coincidentally set up across the street from the show’s enormous King’s Landing set, because nothing on a production this big ever goes exactly as planned.
