Sights and sounds from Disney’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge theme park

Disney has opened the doors to the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge theme park in Disneyland, and some familiar faces were there to greet the first guests: Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Star Wars creator George Lucas, along with Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger.

ANAHEIM, CA – MAY 29: In this handout photo provided by Disneyland Resort, (L-R) George Lucas, Billy Dee Williams, Mark Hamil, Bob Iger and Harrison Ford attend the pre-opening launch of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland on May 29, 2019 in Anaheim, California. “Isn’t this fantastic?” Iger enthused as he walked onstage and looked up at the full-scale Millennium Falcon. “I have been in this job for 14 years. There are some good days, but this is right up there with the best of them.” Iger introduced Lucas, Williams, Hamill and Ford in turn, and each one got some time to speak to the audience.

Entertainment Weekly reporter Anthony Breznican was in attendance, and provided some fun footage of the opening ceremonies. Below, Ford is called upon to ply his trade and fix the Millennium Falcon:

Galaxy’s Edge will, of course, allow fans on board the Millennium Falcon, as well as into a variety of other Star Wars locations:

“You are going to love it!” shouted Billy Dee Williams during the introduction. “This land is for you!” The “land” is a remote outpost on the planet Batuu, located on the Outer Rim of the Unknown Regions of the Star Wars universe. It’s a rough and ready frontier port, packed full of scum and villainy.

It’s great to see the original trilogy Star Wars veterans having some fun, although it’s all a little bittersweet without the deceased Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia Organa) and Peter Mayhew (the original Chewbacca) onstage with them.

If you’re interested and have the time, here’s the full 40-minute live-stream from Disneyland:

Galaxy’s Edge will bring the world alive with stage shows. Below, Kylo Ren shows up and chokes a guy:

Guests can also visit Savi’s Workshop, where they can make their own lightsaber. Below, Los Angeles Times reporter Mark Potts walks us through it:

Star Wars die-hards will find little Easter eggs scattered all over the park. One of the best spots for this may be Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, where guests can purchase high-end merchandise and toys. Among the items on display are The Mandalorian‘s helmet and gun, a headdress resembling that of the Ewok shaman Lograyand and what looks like the Kalikori of Hera Syndulla from Star Wars Rebels.

Below, Vanessa Hand Orellana of CNET gives us a thorough tour:

And now for the main event: you can drink in Galaxy’s Edge:

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens at California’s Disneyland on Friday, and at Florida’s Walt Disney World Resort on August 29. Be aware that while the “Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run” ride and most of the shops and restaurants will be up and running for the opening, the “Rise of the Resistance” ride won’t be operational until phase two, which starts “later this year.”
