Outlander cast drops hints about the upcoming fifth season

Outlander season 5 is currently in production. The Droughtlander is inching closer to an end, and the cast members are finally at the point where they’re willing to tease a few things about what to expect from this time-traveling swashbuckling romantic period piece.

Star Caitriona Balfe (Claire Fraser), Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser), Sophie Skelton (Brianna Fraser) and Richard Rankin (Roger MacKenzie) — the four major players of the series — did just that on a panel at Starz’s Emmy Showcase in Century City, according to SyFy Wire.

Heughan, who plays the devilishly handsome Jamie Fraser, talked about jumping right back into the world of Outlander after making a couple of movies:

"As we saw at the end of Season 4, [Jamie] made a deal with the Redcoats and it’s the wrong side. But, I think [otherwise], the characters feel settled. Fraser’s Ridge has flourished and they’ve really established their roots. […] It’s a lot of responsibility, not only for his family, but his tenants, and everyone who lives in the area. With that comes responsibility, and that’s where he’s got himself into a problem."

If you’ve been following the series — or if you’ve read Diana Gabaldon’s popular 5 — then you know season 5 is going to bring some big changes. It’s the first season where the major characters are all together from the get-go. ““It’s been so nice for us all to be together,” Skelton said.

As far as the plot goes, the cast was understandably mum about it all. However, Rankin did say that the team is compressing parts of the fifth book — The Fiery Cross — which opens with the Fraser clan preparing to participate in a traditional Scottish Gathering, for TV.  “It’s all very early stages in terms of the adaptation,” Rankin said. “Adaptations are always going to be tricky, especially with book five. There’s quite a lot of it in the first part. There’s too much to transfer over to television anyway; half the season would be gone with just the Gathering alone. But they are doing a great job with it.”

As long as the heart of the story is kept intact, we’ll deal. And Skelton assured fans that Bree and Roger will get a chance to reconnect after all the troubles they faced in season 4. And there’s a baby!
