11. Brienne finishes Jaime’s pages in the White Book
From the minute this scene opened and I realized what Brienne was doing, my heart began to ache. Though there isn’t a single line of dialogue, so much is conveyed. We find out that Brienne is the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard (whose duty it is to write in the White Book), that she knows Jaime is dead and how he died. Brienne’s grief feels so real, yet she bears it with quiet dignity as she writes Jaime’s story, bringing all of us along with her.
When Jaime’s pages are first shown, they are sadly empty compared to many of his brothers. Joffrey even made a point to mock Jaime for this all the way back in the season 4 premiere. That Brienne, who saw the man Jaime truly was better than anyone, gets to fill in the blanks and record the history of his life is very fitting. It’s bittersweet that Jaime is gone, but at least his story will be passed on in a way that illustrates his character.
Up until this scene, we’re never given a chance to see how Brienne has processed Jaime leaving her in “The Last of the Starks,” or how she’s reconciled with his decision to go back and die alongside Cersei. We don’t know what she feels. The words that she chooses to describe his life give us closure. While she might not agree with Jaime’s decision, Brienne can still acknowledge that he held true to himself, and in his own way, acted true to the code of the Kingsguard to the last.
