20. Jorah defends Dany to the death

The final season is filled with characters meeting heroic (and not so heroic) ends. Jorah Mormont’s last stand is one of the best. Jorah has been at Daenerys’ side ever since the first episode. When she discovered that he was spying on her for Varys and banished him, we get a brief glimpse at the broken man Jorah is without her. Daenerys represents a second chance for Jorah, an opportunity to earn back his honor after disgracing his house and family.

And boy does he deliver. After fighting his way back to her side, sailing off to Oldtown to search out a cure for grayscale, and volunteering for the borderline-suicidal expedition beyond the Wall, Jorah finds himself right back where he started, and where he belongs: between Daenerys and her enemies. There’s never been a moment on the show where Dany’s situation was as absolutely hopeless as when she falls off of Drogon and finds herself alone on the battlefield, surrounded by the undead.

The showrunners have said that if Jorah could have chosen how to die, this would have been what he’d wanted. Jorah meets his end as valiantly as any Queensguard or Kingsguard in the history of Westeros, only laying down to rest once it’s clear that the threat has ended. Daenerys cradling Jorah’s body as Drogon curls up over her is a scene we won’t be forgetting any time soon.
