18. Tyrion and Sansa revisit their past

Tyrion was one of the first people to show Sansa kindness during her time in King’s Landing. Their marriage back in Season 3 was something neither wanted, but in watching these two perpetual underdogs navigate the political minefield they found themselves in, it became clear that under different circumstances they would have made a good couple.

But like life, Game of Thrones takes turns. The deeper we got into the show, the more Tyrion and Sansa’s paths diverged. By the time they were brought back together at Winterfell in season 8, there was so much else going on that it was hard to imagine them finding the time to talk about their shared history.

Enter the crypts. As the worst battle in living memory rages overhead, Sansa professes that the most heroic thing any of them can do is “look the truth in the face”. Never being one to avoid a harsh truth, Tyrion takes the opportunity to wonder whether they should have stayed married. It’s a touching scene, because even as Sansa tells him that it wouldn’t have worked, it’s obvious that these two do care about one another. Peter Dinklage and Sophie Turner are tender and believable in this scene. It’s a fan service moment that feels completely warranted.

And of course, you can’t talk about Sansa and Tyrion’s time in the crypts without mentioning their quiet hand-holding moment hiding behind the coffin from the wights. Though neither does much fighting, these are two of the bravest characters on the show, and it was touching to see how they reacted to each other when they thought they might have only minutes left to live.
