Game of Thrones is over, but if HBO has their way, we won’t be away from Westeros for too long. Based on the number of actors gathering in Belfast, filming has begun on a pilot for a Game of Thrones prequel show. It might be called Bloodmoon, it might be called The Long Night…we’re not sure yet, but we do know that it’s happening. It’s happening.
As with Game of Thrones before it, there’s a network of Twitter users who are scoping out the locations and sets of the show to give us glimpses of what might be in store. With filming underway, we thought now might be a good time to have a look at some of those sets, starting with this rock cliff thing on the backlot at Titanic Studios, where much of the original show was filmed:
Seen from another angle, there’s a hole in that cliff:
As @a_red_priestess says, it looks like they’re making a little cave system. That immediately makes me think of the Children of the Forest, who live in caves and trees and other natural structures. Bloodmoon (that’s just what I’m going to call the show until they announce an official title) is set thousands of years before the mainline series, back when the Children were still more common in Westeros. Will they have a big presence on the show?
There’s also a wooden frame for…something!
We’ve also got a big green screen facing inward, which blocks spoiler-hounds from seeing too much. In fact, there’s a lot of that happening on the set, with HBO putting crates everywhere. It looks like they’ve learned some lessons from Game of Thrones and are taking care to make their sets as private as possible, not that that stops the truly dedicated.
According to another Twitter user, there’s been filming with horses at Saintfield, the same place the Battle of the Bastards was filmed:
That doesn’t mean, of course, that they’re shooting a battle scene; by this point, Saintfield is just a place the Game of Thrones knows well; Bloodmoon is lucky to have this filmic infrastructure already in place.
So what’s next for the production?
You heard it here: Bloodmoon has some important scenes in caves.

We’re still not sure when the actual series might air, or even if HBO will pick up the pilot, but we’re excited to see where this all goes.
