Outlander: Can Brianna forgive Jamie? Sophie Skelton weighs in
By Ariba Bhuvad
Outlander will be back in our lives soon enough thus ending the Droughtlander that always manages to break us during the hiatus. As a huge fan of the series, I’m so excited to see where the story will go from here after the events of last season. I have not read the books so I’m completely in the dark about what’s to come, but what I do know is that the fifth season will be based on Diana Gabaldon’s fifth book in the Outlander series, The Fiery Cross.
Based on sneak peeks, promos, and interviews, season 5 will bring a new dynamic as Brianna — played by Sophie Skelton — will embrace a new role: motherhood. Of course, the whole situation is a bit sensitive as Brianna was a victim of rape last season, and the identity of the baby’s father was in question. Skelton’s performance during season 4 is one that I will always remember because it was so emotionally jarring and heartbreaking.
But now that season 5’s production is well underway and the sadness of season 4 is behind us (at least, I hope so), there is a lot to look forward to — you know, like a baby! Recently, the cast of Outlander went to Century City, California to attend an Emmy Awards “For Your Consideration” event for STARZ where Skelton spoke with Parade about Brianna’s role in season 5.

One of the things I’m most curious about and something Skelton spoke about during her interview is what Brianna’s relationship with Jamie will look like. You see, there was quite the colossal misunderstanding in season 4 after Jamie mistook Roger to be the man who raped Brianna. But this is the case only because Lizzie — the girl who was looking after Brianna — pointed out Roger as the man responsible because she too was confused. And now we’re all good and confused.
“If it was anyone’s fault, it’s Lizzie’s (Caitlin O’Ryan) and no one blames her, and I think it’s true. Lizzie’s the one who made the mistake, but no one blames her,” Skelton said. “It was a mistake and I think Bree’s very much forgiven Jamie. I think she was just sad and scared and angry and lonely, and it was very easy to just put that blame on Jamie because they’re so similar.”
So, now that we can rest assured Bree is over the whole “my father sold my lover and beat the crap out of him” fiasco, I am wondering how season 5 of Outlander will progress the story. Like I said before, I haven’t read the books so I have no idea what’s coming. The whole family is now living in the past; there’s a child in the mix, and if time travel movies and shows have taught us anything, it’s about to get very, very interesting.
