These fan-made title cards for Game of Thrones prequels are amazing

With the end of Game of Thrones behind us, it’s hard to imagine any show will ever be grand enough to fill the hole in our heart where the show once rested. In fact, our only hope might just be in one of HBO’s planned spinoffs or prequels or whatever you want to call them.

We already know filming has begun on the pilot for Bloodmoon (that’s a working title, for the nonce), a prequel that is set to take place during the Age of Heroes and The Long Night which happened thousands of years before the main show’s timeline.

Still, even if the pilot gets a series order from HBO, it will likely be 2021 before we can have any hope of a new show set in our favorite fictional world. So what’s a desperate fanbase to do in the meantime? Why, speculate and create amazing works of art that could legitimately serve as title cards for a prequel show, of course.

In that regard, meme creator and graphic artist supreme, Wightsking, added some truly gorgeous work-ups of what each spinoff’s title card would be like to their Instagram. Let’s start with Bloodmoon:

What I like about each of these designs is that Wightsking incorporated the Game of Thrones font. I’m really starting to come around to the idea that Bloodmoon could be a great name for the first prequel, and it’s the design that’s selling me on it.

If Bloodmoon doesn’t work, then The Long Night is definitely an option. I dig the Night King’s sigil as the backdrop for the title. My only criticism here is that I’d have gone with a muted icy-blue tone like Thrones used every time a White Walker or the Night King himself showed up. That being said, it’s still striking in gold.

If HBO ever decides to tell the story of Valyria before the Doom that destroyed it, then Freehold is a great title. The actual Freehold itself covered parts of Essos (the land across the Narrow Sea from Westeros) which provided the Dragonlords of Valyria with many slaves. I think the chain woven through the fire-reflected title fits nicely with that idea.

Finally, we have one of my favorite stories from George R.R. Martin’s stories based on A Song of Ice and Fire —The Hedge Knight. Remember the title “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” for the second episode of season 8? Well, that title and the song Podrick sings in the episode works nicely with this prequel idea, as well as Martin’s stories about Duncan the Tall (the hedge knight himself) and his squire Egg.

Egg turns out to be Aegon V Targaryen, and when he becomes King of Westeros, he makes Duncan the Tall — who’s sigil was the tree that is worked into the lettering of the title card — the Lord Commander of his Kingsguard. Brienne is a descendant of Duncan (before he donned the white cloak) and her becoming the Lord Commander of Bran the Broken’s Kingsguard closed that circle quite nicely.

I’d love a prequel based on the tales of Dunk and Egg. Although, I’d have used that blue on the title for The Long Night…but I digress. These are great works of art, and I hope we see more in the future. What are some ideas and titles you have for a Game of Thrones spinoff or prequel? Let’s discuss in the comments, and maybe Wightsking will mock up a few more.
