On-set images tease mammoths in HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel?

As we reported a few days back, filming on the pilot for HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel show — which we’re going to call Bloodmoon, the show’s working title, until HBO gives us something else — is underway in Northern Ireland. Some very intriguing new set photos have appeared on the @BloodmoonIrl Twitter account. Let’s talk about them.

To catch folks up to speed, a lot of what the BloodMoon team has been filming so far has involved caves. They’ve built a cave system at Titanic Studios, long the nerve center of shooting on Game of Thrones…

…and they’re currently shooting on location at the Marble Arch Caves in County Fermanagh:

Scenic.

Naturally, no one can actually get a shot of what they’re filming inside the caves — there’s no need to erect walls when nature has done it for you — but there are some interesting images of the crew loading into the area. Most interesting is this sign indicating where crew members should go:

Back when HBO was shooting Game of Thrones, filming areas would be peppered with pink signs labeled “GoT.” They became a hallmark of the production:

Is the mammoth sign Bloodmoon’s equivalent of the pink GoT signs? Are we going to grow to love it over the next eight years?

And how much should we read into the mammoth as Bloodmoon’s choice of mascot? Will there be mammoths on the show? We saw a couple on Game of Thrones, as when giants used one to try and breach the Wall at Castle Black in “The Watchers on the Wall”:

Bloodmoon takes place thousands of years before Thrones, in a time when mammoths, giants, direwolves and other legendary creatures were more common. I’m all for more mammoths on my TV, so if the sign implies we’re going to get a lot of them, I approve.

There are more pics. It looks like Game of Thrones standby G&H is back to provide the Bloodmoon production with trucks and trailers:

Also interesting is this Warner Bros. truck, a sign of changes being made following AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner, which owns HBO. After the purchase, it looks like WarnerMedia is in charge of all things entertainment at AT&T:

Finally, circling back to the set at Titanic Studios, it looks like the crew might have put together a weirwood tree:

Between the weirwood, the mammoths, and the caves, I’m betting at least a good chunk of the pilot will take place in the North, or maybe beyond the area where the Wall will one day stand. We’ll keep you posted.
