Avengers: Endgame passes Avatar as history’s highest grossing film…sort of

Like a superhero and supervillain locked in eternal struggle (not saying which is which), Avengers: Endgame and 2009’s Avatar  continue to duke it out for the title of Highest Grossest Film of All Time. And now, there is a winner…kind of.

Let’s start with the big news: Avengers: Endgame has officially passed Avatar’s original theatrical gross of $2,749,064,328. According to MovieWebEndgame has taken in $2,749,603,966, narrowly edging out its arch-rival.

But has it passed Avatar’s overall box office? And what’s the difference?

The situation is complicated because after Avatar’s historic 2009 box office run, Fox rereleased the movie in 2010, which brought in an additional $33 million. And if that was enough, Fox also released a special enhanced addition of the movie at the end of the 2009 run, which brought in another $5 million. That’s a total of $38 million from rereleases, and that’s about the amount Endgame still has to make if it really wants to claim the title of box office king.

And before you claim that Fox gamed the system with these Avatar rereleases, keep in mind that Endgame is trying to pull the same trick by releasing an enhanced edition of the movie that features a six-minute post credit reel.
