We might be waiting a while for the X-Men to enter the MCU

Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox and its assets led to quite a bit of excitement among Marvel fans, most of whom have been frustrated by the split between the Disney-owner Marvel Cinematic Universe films and the Fox-owned Marvel properties like X-Men, Fantastic Four and Venom. With the merger, these franchises — which were previously forced to exist in completely different universes, give or take a couple of X-Men turning up in the Deadpool movies — can now come together.

And with Avengers: Endgame bringing a major phase of the MCU to a close, it’s the perfect time to introduce some new faces. Unfortunately, despite the good timing, there doesn’t seem to be much demand for more X-Men installments, at least judging by the poor reception Dark Phoenix got from critics and moviegoers alike.

Still, the X-Men characters — all of whom have been through a jumble of inconsistent storylines over the past decade or so — are due for a reboot. And Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige acknowledged the opportunities that stem from having such an arsenal of characters to work with, even if he has no immediate plans to utilize them.

Speaking with Fandango, it sounds like Feige is in no hurry to introduce X-Men or Fantastic Four character to the MCU, or at least, he’s not going to do it before they’re ready. He might introduce them as smaller parts in other people’s movies, as how Black Panther and Spider-Man were introduced in Captain American: Civil War. Or if it feels right, they could get their own movies right out of the gate. “It just depends on the story we’re trying to tell,” he said.

"It’s still early days, but it’s been a fun exercise, and it’s one, by the way, that we’ve been doing for years. Every development meeting starts with cool ideas and fun ideas, and our wheels are always turning in terms of what if… to use a Marvel publishing term."

Hopefully, some of those “cool ideas” will lead to our long-awaited X-Men/MCU crossover. Until then, at least we’ve got plenty of MCU Disney+ series and X-Men’s New Mutants to look forward to.

Next. Sean Astin could have directed the Fantastic Four movie. dark
