See how Jon Snow’s climb up the Wall goes from storyboard to final scene

You don’t get intense, dramatic scenes like those on Game of Thrones without creating a rough draft. Enter storyboards. From the Night King’s demise to Cleganebowl, almost every important scene is storyboarded first, and HBO has been releasing a lot of the artwork on its Game of Thrones blog for fans to enjoy.

Now, fans can take an even deeper dive into this aspect of the show with artist William Simpson’s new book, Game of Thrones: The StoryboardsSimpson has created many of the sketches for the series’ most memorable scenes, and this book will have them all.

For example, fans will be able to take a look at the storyboards for Jon Snow’s iconic climb up the Wall in “The Climb.” Simpson discussed what went into storyboarding this scene with io9:

“You read the script, you get the pictures in your mind, and it’s already playing out as a cinema reel in your head when you start analyzing what shot you’re going to use, what thing you’re going to pick up on, and what you’re going to show to the audience,” Simpson said.

Elsewhere, Insight Editions gives us a look at the storyboard for the very first scene of the show, where ill-fated members of the Night’s Watch go beyond the Wall only to be picked off by wights and White Walkers, with one escaping south to be executed by Ned Stark as a deserter:

Game of Thrones: The Storyboards is 320 pages strong, so you can expect lots more insights into how action-packed moments like these went from conception to execution. It’ll be interesting to see what each of these scenes looked like before the cast and crew brought them to life, particularly if there were changes made in the interim.
