Stranger Things 3 was so tough that sometimes Millie Bobby Brown just wanted to go to Six Flags

Stranger Things is growing up. It’s all over the marketing that this is the summer that will change the Hawkins crew forever. With that growth comes big challenges for Eleven (Millie Bobbie Brown). How did the actor deal with it? As she told Teen Vogue, sometimes you just have to get away:

"To be in a scene where I had to actually portray [Eleven’s abuse at Hawkins Lab] was the scariest, scariest thing. And I remember just like, OK, I’m done. Did we get it all? And they were like, Yeah. And I’m like, Great. Let’s go to Chuck E. Cheese’s, I need to get far away from this moment as fast as possible. And that was season one. And season three, there were definitely moments where I was like, can we go out? Can we go do something? On the weekends I’ll be like, can we just go to Six Flags? I’m ready to just be happy again."

Brown carefully avoids saying what stressed her out so that she needed some weekend time at Six Flags, although to be fair you rarely need an excuse. They’re pretty fun.

There’s certain a degree of ominousness to it, though, which hangs with everything else people have been saying about this the new season. What’s rougher for Eleven than closing the rift to the Upside Down as she did at the end of season 2? Will she have to go toe to toe with the Mind Flayer instead of sealing it off this time? Can she even do that?

Moving on, when talking about creating storylines for Stranger Things, Brown made a comparison to another very popular show. “Because with Stranger Things we’re a little bit different than, say, Game of Thrones because we go into a meeting and we talk about what I want to do, what the kids want to do.” She even had an example, although there’s a predictable lack of detail. “There was a meeting once where I was like, ‘No. That’s a bad idea. Let’s do this.’ And they’re like, ‘Oh, that’s a great idea too.’”

No matter what, though, she says that the theme of the show is “embracing yourself.” That’s a message anyone can internalize.
