Watchmen star Don Johnson previews the series, praises co-star Regina King

HBO is currently readying a show based on Alan Moore’s seminal Watchmen comic, which recently wrapped filming on its inaugural season. The series is being helmed by Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers) and will pick up at some point after the comic ended, with characters like Adrian Veidt, aka Ozymandias (Jeremy Irons), much older.

While we don’t know much about the plot of the show, we do know all-new characters will be introduced. Case in point: actor Don Johnson is playing police chief Judd Crawford, the man wearing the cowboy hat in the trailer below.

Johnson recently joined Collider’s The Deep Cut podcast and praised Lindelof’s vision for Watchmen, while gushing at length about working with Regina King, who plays Angela Abraham, a police detective who moonlights as a masked vigilante.

Before being cast on Watchmen, Johnson already knew about the story. “[I]t’s an iconic piece of material,” he said. “It’s probably the classic graphic novel. Everyone refers to it as the primer for all comic genres and stuff like that. This [series] is beyond comics.”

While he couldn’t reveal much in the way of specifics, Johnson did say we “won’t believe what Damon has done with it and how amazing it is.”

Mainly, Johnson wanted to talk about how much he enjoyed working with King. “There are certain actors you get each other from jump street. Others you have to work a little harder to make a connection and eventually you do. But Regina was like putting on a pair of well worn, comfortable Levi’s.” An evocative metaphor.

"She’s a wonderful actress. Talk about someone who can hit it back. She can put any kind of spin on it you want. [tennis reference] That was a lot of fun. We just had a blast working together. I’m hoping that I get the opportunity to do other things with her cause she is a gifted, gifted actress."

Seeing as how Johnson and King both play police officers, it stands to reason that they’ll share a fair amount of screentime. For her part, HBO released a mosaic of GIFs about King’s character not long ago on the Watchmen Instagram page. Like everything involved in this show, they’re cryptic, but I think I might be looking forward to her character the most.

What do those rosary beads mean? Is she some kind of holy warrior?

“Honor is like the hawk…sometimes it must go hooded” is taken directly from the Watchman graphic novel, “Chapter VIII.”

What exactly this all means will remains a mystery until Watchmen hits HBO this fall.
