Netflix finds composers for its Witcher show

Netflix is building hype for its upcoming show based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels. There’s a poster, there are pictures, and with any luck there’ll be a trailer at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Fingers crossed!

For now, Witcher fansite Redanian Intelligence sussed out news about who will be composing for the show. According to their official CVs, composing partners Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli will create the soundtrack to Geralt’s adventures on the Continent.

Belousova and Ostinelli are an interesting pair with contrasting styles. Belousova has received the Russian Ministry of Culture Award, but she’s not a stodgy classicist. Over on her YouTube channel, she makes exciting arrangements of songs from pop culture, like this epic take on Kanaeda’s theme from Arika. The taste level alone is worth the price of admission.

Ostinelli, meanwhile, is a little more somber. Have a listen to some of his work from the 2017 TV series The Mist:

While both Belousova and Ostinelli have plenty of credits on their own, they’ve worked together on projects like The Romanoffs, Millennials: The Musical, and the webseries Sacred Lies. Here’s a moody sample from that:

Between them, Belousova and Ostinelli seem to have no lack of creativity and vision. I have no doubt they’ll create an interesting soundcape for The Witcher. If this Instagram post from Belousova is any indication, the score will feature lutes, mandolins, renaissance guitars, theorbos and producing vocals, and who knows what else the pair has cooked up?

The Witcher is scheduled to drop on Netflix later this year.
