Who is the American in the post-credits scene?

Although the ending of Stranger Things season 3 wraps up most storylines pretty nicely, the show still gives viewers a post-credits scene that leaves us hanging. We get a glimpse inside of a military facility in Kamchatka, Russia, and it looks like the Russian military is still messing around with things they shouldn’t be.

They’re also holding prisoners. Two soldiers are sent to retrieve one of them. One of the soldiers goes to open the wrong door, earning him a rebuke from the other. “Not the American,” the second guy says, dropping what appears to be an important hint about the show’s future and leaving fans to wonder who exactly he’s referring to.

It seems like we’re supposed to believe that Hopper managed to survive the closing of the Gate, as well as the explosions that followed. That would be impressive to say the least, and even if it’s true, we have to wonder how he managed it, and how he wound up in the hands of the Russian military.

Another option is Dr. Brenner. We tossed around the idea of Eleven’s “father” working with the Russian military, but it’s possible that he’s being held captive there instead. This would explain how the Russian military knows about the Gate in Hawkins, and it would be a clever way to trick the audience into thinking that devastating finale is just a bluff
