Stranger Things season 4 probably not coming anytime soon
It’s only been about two weeks since Stranger Things season 3 dropped on Netflix, with many fans devoured all eight episodes in just a few days. Too soon, we were left with that empty feeling, wondering when season 4 was coming.
While Netflix and creators the Duffer Brothers have yet to confirm there will even be a Stranger Things 4, the show’s popularity seems to leave little room for doubt. Will we have to wait another two years for it? Executive producer Shawn Levy talked to Mashable about not wanting to rush into a new season: “It’s a tough one because I’d love to [make episodes] faster than we do, but the reality is that our show is singular because we are unusually small as a creative team.”
"We’re definitely trying to make the show as quickly as we can. We’re not in control of those things, but we don’t want to bullshit about those things. We want to control every detail of every episode ourselves and that level of micromanagement, that level of authorship, and detail-oriented creativity, it simply takes more time."
So the good news is that Levy sounds like he’s definitely planning more more episodes, but the bad news is that they’re probably not coming anytime soon.
So as long as we’re waiting, we might as well come up with some fan theories. Mashable has a good one named the Winona Collision. Let’s dig in.
So Stranger Things stars Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, Will’s mom. Ryder just so happens to be from Glen Ellyn, Illinois, which isn’t very far from the town of Hawkins, Indiana. The third season of Stranger Things takes place in 1985. Ryder appeared in her first movie, Lucas, in 1986 and was a household name thanks to Beetlejuice and Heathers in 1988.
You see where we’re going here? Is Winona Ryder the actress going to show up in the world of Stranger Things? Will the characters see her movies and be confused as to why a doppleganger of their friends’ mom is up there dancing in the air?
And if this does happen, is the doppleganger from the Upside Down? We saw that the Mind Flayer had a gaggle of copies of Hawkins townsfolk in reserve in season 3. Or maybe Joyce moves her family to Hollywood, changes her name, and BECOMES the ’80s starlet? Is time travel involved? HOW DEEP DOES THE RABBIT HOLE GO?
Mr. Levy, do you have a comment? “That’s really funny, and I suppose it’s possible?” Good enough for us.

Speaking of the Byers family, Noah Schnapp, who plays Will, spoke to The Wrap about the fan chatter that his character might be gay. In season 3, Will spends a lot of time frustrated that his friends are more interested in girls than playing Dungeons & Dragons with him, at one point inspiring an equally frustrated Mike to snap at Will that “[i]t’s not my fault you don’t like girls.”
That moment is up for interpretation, but Schnapp is happy to provide his insight. “While all the characters were out developing and growing up, Will was in the Upside Down and he was alone there, not interacting with or connected to his friends or the rest of the world. And when he got back, he expected everything to just go back to how it was before, how it was when he was normal and when he was a kid and he wanted to go back to the basement and play D&D.”

Speaking of ambiguities, Schnapp is as in the dark as any of us regarding the fate of Sheriff Jim Hopper (David Harbour). “I wish I knew!” he said. “I really don’t know. First of all the ending was amazing… I hope his death was not real and Hopper is still there. But I loved it. It was really sad.”
And yes, Schnapp makes no effort to hide that the Duffers are writing a fourth season even as we speak. “But I can’t tell you what’s going to happen cause I don’t know. I’m excited to see where it goes next season. And we’re still figuring out, if there is another season, where we would film and stuff.”
"I really don’t know what to expect with anything coming up. I mean, the Duffers really don’t know what’s happening either. They’re all writing it now and I guess we’ll see when we get back."
Although Will’s sexuality is in question, Robin’s is not. Played by Maya Hawke — yes, she is the daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman — Robin came out to Steve (Joe Keery) in a very tender moment the two shared in “The Bite.” Screenplayed released a really cool video that lets you watch how the script for that scene was translated to the screen:
First of all, is anyone else grossed out that Steve and Robin are sitting on the floor of a public restroom, hanging on the toilets? Beyond that, this was a terrific scene. And I like that Robin called Steve a douchebag even though it wasn’t in the script.
Also, did you know Robin’s last name was Buckley? It was never mentioned in season 3, but it’s a gift from the Twitter account for the Stranger Things writers room.
Moving on, remember the Terminator-looking Russian hitman who duked it out with Hopper in season 3? Actor Andrey Ivchenko thinks his character might have survived. “This is just my personal theory,” he told Yahoo Entertainment, “Hopper throws me into the cannon while the cannon is shooting the laster to open the Upside Down gate. And that gate is slightly open, with a significant crack in the wall. So when he throws me into the cannon, I could easily be transported into the Upside Down. That could happen, you know? I could wake up in the Upside Down.”
If that theory turns out to be true, then perhaps he’ll run into Hopper while he’s in the Upside Down? At least, that’s if you subscribe to theories about what happened to Hawkins’ police chief.
While you mull on that, enjoy this video of Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven) giving her take on The Neverending Story theme song, recently brought back into the public consciousness by Dustin and Suzie’s rendition in the season 3 finale:
It ends up she did this as part of the #NeverEndingChallenge campaign, one of those hashtag challenges everyone loves so much. Actor Tami Stronach, who played the Childlike Empress in The NeverEnding Story, shot back…
…as did Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert:
So people are finding plenty of ways to entertain themselves between now and Stranger Things season 4, whenever that ends up being. Keep your walkie-talkie’s on.
