George R.R. Martin shares new images from the 2020 A Song of Ice and Fire calendar
We’re only halfway through 2019, but it’s never too early to start shopping for a calendar for next year, so you won’t miss a beat when January comes. Might we suggest the 2020 A Song of Ice and Fire calendar, which is out on July 30 and available for preorder now?
Artist John Howe has created an illustration for each month, as well as a bonus fold-out poster. George R.R. Martin previewed a few of the pages on his Not a Blog. Let’s take a look, starting with a giant kraken that’s washed ashore:
See how large it is compared to the tiny men by the boat? Looking at this monster, I can now see why House Greyjoy uses it for their sigil.
Here, we have a three-eyed raven watching as two figures enter a cave beneath a tree:
There’s moss on the trees and no snow on the ground in this illustration — I wonder if this is what the Three-Eyed Raven’s cave looked like before the snows covered the lands beyond the Wall…or it’s a warm summer day. In any case, it’s a beautiful piece.
We actually got a look at the cover for this calendar way back in 2018. May I present the fabled ice spiders big as hounds…or bigger, if this illustration is anything to go by:
If you haven’t picked it up, the theme for the 2020 calendar is “magical creatures.”
