Hans Zimmer turned down Christopher Nolan to score the new Dune movie
In November of next year, Legendary Pictures’ highly-anticipated Dune movie will hit theaters. It’s based on the first half of author Frank Herbert’s seminal science-fiction novel of the same name, with Bladerunner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve at the helm. Villeneuve brought the man who composed the soundtrack for Bladerunner 2049 — legendary composer Hans Zimmer — on board to create the score for Dune.
Speaking with The Playlist, Zimmer revealed that he turned down a gig working with long-time collaborator Christopher Nolan (the director behind the Dark Knight trilogy and Inception) to work on Dune. “Dune is one of my favorite books from my teenage years and I love Denis Villeneuve, obviously.”
Although Zimmer loved the Dune books as a kid, he never watched David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation. “And I never saw the original Dune movie, and so, I’m coming at this in a fresh way, just from the book.” That’s probably for the best, because Lynch’s version was…
Speaking of the ’80s, Zimmer and Dune’s film editor, Joe Walker, have worked together on many movies dating back to that bygone era, which is something he sees an added bonus. “[I]t almost feels like family.”

Zimmer has composed some killer scores over the years for movies like Thelma & Louise, The Lion King, Gladiator and Pirates of the Caribbean. Hopefully, his passion for Dune will be apparent when it hits theaters next year.
