Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren book coming in December
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might be bringing the current trilogy of Star Wars films to a close, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see more of the franchise’s newest characters beyond December. In fact, at San Diego Comic-Con, Lucasfilm announced a four-issue comic miniseries from Marvel Comics following Kylo Ren, the major villain from the most recent Star Wars installments. The first of these will be released this December — right around the time the third film hits theaters — and Charles Soule will be writing them.
Soule isn’t new to writing in the Star Wars universe. He’s also penned comics about Darth Vader and Poe Dameron, two other fan favorites. And knowing that he’s had experience writing Vader, Kylo Ren’s grandfather and idol, is comforting — it means he has an understanding of the motivations that drive the character whose story he’s taking on next.
Soule will need to understand Kylo Ren’s relationship to his family, as the comic series, which is coined The Rise of Kylo Ren, will give readers insight into the villain’s history. All we really know currently is that Kylo had a troubled relationship with his father, Han Solo, along with failed training at Luke’s Jedi Academy, which ended with Luke almost killing his own nephew — and then with Ben killing the rest of Luke’s students instead.

Soule’s story will flesh out these narratives further, showing fans how Ben Solo made the jump to becoming Kylo Ren (and helping us understand why Luke was so tempted to kill him in the first place). Kylo Ren is one of the franchise’s more interesting villains, as he’s show brief glimpses of humanity even after turning to the Dark Side. It’ll be fascinating to see his perspective of his own story, and to see how he fell into the service of Snoke.
In addition to Kylo’s new series, the Lucasfilm Publishing panel also announced several other titles, including a Star Wars version of Grimm’s Fairytales. The cover for the The Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary has surfaced as well, with the promise of educating fans on all the lore from the latest trilogy.
