Doctor Who: The Legacy of Time review: Many Doctors save the day in Collision Course
By James Aggas
When the Fourth Doctor arrives on a mysterious world, it leads to an adventure that will take more than one Doctor to save the day, in the final episode of the epic Doctor Who box set The Legacy of Time!
In the final episode of the epic Doctor Who box set The Legacy of Time, Leela and Romana are facing disaster on Gallifrey. Somehow, it reminds them of when they each traveled with the Doctor and had an adventure on the planet Henlen. But why are these adventures important now? Why didn’t the Doctor remember visiting the same world twice? And what do these adventures have to do with the end of the universe?
Collision Course is a pretty crucial story, as it has to act as the finale to the whole of The Legacy of Time. More than that, it also has to function as its own story in its own right. And it does, in a strange way.
The story is essentially split into two halves. The first focuses on two very different Fourth Doctor adventures, and highlights the different types of story that you’d get with either Leela or Romana. It’s an unusual way to tell a Fourth Doctor story, but considering how the whole of The Legacy of Time has been focused around time distortion, it’s a natural fit for this box set. We also learn what’s been causing all of the problems with time, too.
The first half of Collision Course is enjoyable, but it doesn’t quite feel like the epic finale that it should do, not at first, anyway. This has been an extremely epic box set, one that’s taken place across numerous times and planets, and the Fourth Doctor’s adventure doesn’t feel as epic as it should do.
An epic conclusion
However, that completely changes in the second half. Because it’s in this portion of the story when many familiar faces turn up to save the day…
The second half of Collision Course is what the fans have been waiting for since The Legacy of Time was announced. Is it a satisfying conclusion to the story? Definitely. While the episode did take a while to get going, the second half gives us exactly what we want – and so much more. There are a few little surprises here, ones that will put a huge smile on your face when you hear them.
More from Winter is Coming
- For All Mankind finally gives us information in Episode 405, “Goldilocks”
- Watch a stunning VFX breakdown of The Wheel of Time season 2
- Of course Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) thinks Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen) should rule Westeros
- Confirmed: The Last of Us season 2 will air in 2025
- Final season of Star Trek: Discovery will have “a lot of action, a lot of adventure, a lot of fun”
It all leads to a sequence that’s incredibly satisfying to hear, as we hear six Doctors both bicker and support one another in the final epic sequence. What brings them together is simple, but effective, and leads to a sequence that’s as exciting as the Doctors saving Gallifrey in The Day of the Doctor.
Overall, The Legacy of Time has been an incredible achievement by Big Finish. We’ve been given so many great stories in this box set, with such a wide variety of Doctors and stories. While all the episodes have been based around the same theme, each of them has been so different, and has been excellent at giving a glimpse of Big Finish’s wider universe.
More than that: this box set has shown exactly how much Big Finish has achieved over the past twenty years, and it’s incredible. We’ve had countless Doctor Who stories with so many Doctors, old and new, as well as so many strong spin-off series. Collision Course, while it doesn’t start out that way, eventually acts as a wonderfully fitting conclusion to such a fantastic box set.
