At Comic-Con, Marvel dumped a veritable ton of information about its upcoming plans for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the post-Infinity Saga world. One of the more intriguing projects (at least to me) is its animated What If…? series set to debut on Disney+ sometime in the summer of 2021.

Now, before you dismiss the show as just a cartoon, consider that not only has Westworld star Jeffrey Wright been tapped to voice Uatu the Watcher, but many of the actors fro the MCU proper will also voice their animated counterparts, including  Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Michael Douglas (Dr. Hank Pym), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Karen Gillan (Nebula) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor).

Speaking to Screen Rant, Marvel President Kevin Feige says the first season of the show will focus entirely upon the 23 movies that make up the first three phases of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, everything from Iron Man to Spider-Man: Far From Home. “Right now, we’re focusing on for the first season, everything you know about the 23 movies in the Infinity Saga and adding one twist to them and seeing how everything turns out different.”

For those unfamiliar with the comic series on which the show will be based, What If…? explored how tiny changes affected major events. So for instance, with Uatu the Watcher as our guide, one story could focus on the results of Odin leaving Loki to die as a baby frost giant, or we could see what would have happened had Star Lord not punched Thanos on Titan, allowing Spider-Man the final couple of seconds he needed to remove the Infinity Gauntlet. The results are not always what you might think, and at least in the comic series, almost always had a very dark result for our heroes and villains.
