American Gods just might have a drama-free start to its third season, a marked contrast from what we saw go down ahead of season 2. After a rough patch, is Starz’s drama about the Old Gods fighting the New back on track?
Per Slash Film, Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch spoke at the Television Critics Association press tour and assured everyone that all is well for season 3. This time around, the showrunner/executive producer is Charles “Chic” Eglee, of Dexter fame. (Let’s hope he didn’t have anything to do with that show’s final season.) “We brought Chic on, who’s doing a tremendous job with season three,” Hirsch said. “Our partners at Fremantle continue to do a really good job to bring that show back into network. We feel pretty good about what’s happening with the show. […] What I can speak to is what’s going on for season three. Based on what Chic is bringing to the table, we’re seeing in the scripts, writing and development, it’s coming on really, really well.”
To catch you up, American Gods ran into trouble when then-showrunner Jesse Alexander was given the boot after a tumultuous filming cycle marked by script delays, actors writing their own lines, and more. And all of that came after the original showrunners, Michael Green and Bryan Fuller, left after the first season. Going into its third season, the show has already had three different showrunners. Is Eglee the one to stabilize this ship?

I’d really like to believe the network on this one, but they said much the same thing when things were scattered in season 2. I’m crossing my fingers for a seamless shoot and post-production cycle on American Gods season 3, but until I’m watching it at home, I will likely be wary. Let’s see how things pan out when production starts in September!
