Orlando Bloom: I’m too old to play Legolas again

J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is heading to TV thanks to Amazon, which is readying a show set during the Second Age of Middle-earth. I simply can’t wait to see the magical and massive world we remember from Peter Jackson’s movies on the small screen. And if anyone has the resources to do it right, it’s Amazon.

Earlier this week, we got our first inside look at the new show, including peeks at maps as well as introduction to members of the creative team, which is headed up by showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay. Writer Bryan Cogman, known for his work on Game of Thrones, is also on board.

That said, we still don’t know much about the cast of the show, outside of Australian actor Markella Kavenagh being considered for an unnamed role. In Tolkien’s world, elves are immortal, so is it possible we could see some characters from The Lord of the Rings proper show up? For example, how about Orlando Bloom returning as Legolas, the forest elf who helps Frodo and company take the One Ring to Mount Doom (before they get separated, anyway)? You all remember that glorious silver and wavy hair flowing in the wind as he masterfully took down orcs with a strike of his bow. Legolas was a dream.

According to Bloom, it’s not in the cards. “I like to think of myself as ageless but I don’t know where I would fit into that world,” he told Esquire. “If you’re saying as Legolas, they’ve probably got some 19-year-old kid who is ready to go.”

Y’know, he doesn’t look bad for 42, but we take his point.

The point is probably moot, anyway, since Legolas was born shortly after the end of Second Age. Elrond (Hugo Weaving), though…that’s a possibility.

For now, you can see Bloom as a detective in a supernatural world in Amazon’s Carnival Row, so if he’s not in the Lord of the Rings show, at least he’s nearby.
