Marvel has taken over the world in the last decade, so it comes as absolutely no surprise that it has the biggest fandom in the world. That is not speculation. The Hollywood Reporter, in collaboration with Morning Consult, actually conducted a survey that proves this point, discovering that the Marvel fandom even outstrips the one for Game of Thrones.
Am I surprised by that? Not really. We’re talking about Marvel here, which has over 20 major movies under its belt with worlds more planned, and that doesn’t even take into consideration the 80 years of comic publishing. I don’t think it’s fair to compare, but let’s roll with it for the sake of the survey.
The survey asked a sample of 2,200 adults questions over the course of three days (July 8-10). It was attempting to discover which genre/company fans are the most loyal to. It’s not a complete shocker, but 63% of that sample said they were Marvel fans. Star Wars followed closely behind at 60%, and then DC at 59%. Given their spotty track record with movies of late, I’m a bit surprised DC had that much; just saying.
So where did Game of Thrones fall in this survey sample? Only 24% of those surveyed called themselves fans. That’s below Star Trek (49%), The Lord of the Rings (48%), The Walking Dead (37%) and about equal with Doctor Who, which also polled at 24%.
Honestly Doctor Who is pretty surprising, too, given how long that show has been around, but then again, I wonder if the nationality of the people surveyed had an effect.
But on to Game of Thrones, you’d expect more people to be fans given how much buzz the show generated when it’s on. Of course, unlike most of those other fandoms, Game of Thrones hasn’t yet established itself as something that can last beyond the base show. HBO’s prequel series could be a big proving ground for the property, if that’s what it is now. There are also some wrinkles to the data, like the division of fans into “avid” and “casual” fans. But one thing from this survey is clear: As THR puts it, when it comes to pop culture, we’re living in Marvel’s world.
