Avatar is no longer the highest-grossing movie in history. It was a tough race, but Avengers: Endgame officially overtook Avatar about a week back. The final tally, as of right now, is $2,793.7 billion to $2,789.7 billion in Endgame’s favor.

Mostly, people in the Avatar camp have been very gracious about all this, with Avatar director James Cameron even sending out congratulations:

But the battle could just be heating up. Avatar may have lost the top spot for now, but Disney is planning four sequels to the movie, all of them currently slated to be directed by Cameron. Filming on Avatar 2 has revving up, and some of the cast members aren’t quite as easy-going as their director.

Speaking to Comicbook.comAvatar 2 star Cliff Curtis took a break from taking about his new movie — Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw — to ever-so-slightly undercut Endgame’s accomplishment and tease a rivalry to come:

"You know, Jim, James Cameron, and Jon Landau, they’re very classy men and they salute the accomplishments of — we got an email — they salute the accomplishments of Marvel. Mind you, my perspective is –because I’m an Avatar family — [Marvel] came into that with 20 movies. And I think, you know, I can’t wait to see what happens."

Alright, Cliff Curtis, alright. Yes, Endgame may have had a lot of other MCU movies building up to it, but it earned that buildup through meticulous planning and craftsmanship. Avatar has taken years and years to come out with a sequel and we’ve still got some way to go — just saying.
