Lilly Wachowski isn’t working on new Matrix movies, but…

We live in an age of reboots and sequels, so fans could be forgiven for wondering when Warner Bros. is going to bring back the bullet-timing, mind-bending sci-fi franchise The Matrix. The original trilogy came to an end with The Matrix Reloaded back in 2003, but recent whisperings have suggested that more projects might be on the horizon.

And while there’s no concrete news from Warner Bros. about a reboot or spin-off, Lilly Wachowski, — who served as writer, director and executive producer on the original films — has said that she approves ofThe Matrix getting more movies. Her statement follows rumors that she and her sister Lana Wachowski have already been planning future additions to The Matrix world. Unfortunately, while Lilly is all for more Matrix films hitting theaters, it doesn’t look likely she’ll be involved in their creation.

At the 2019 TCA summer tour, Lilly told /Film that she’s been busy (presumably working on her Showtime series Work in Progress), but added, “I like it when stories go out into the world and then come back to you in different ways. I mean, that’s what storytelling is all about. I’m part of a bigger thing. I don’t have any ownership over stuff like that, so whatever story anybody wants to tell, I can’t wait to hear. I hope it’s better than the original.”

Lilly’s blessing, combined with former Warner CEO Kevin Tsujihara’s recent statement that the company was interested in creating more Matrix films, seems to suggest that we will in fact be seeing some sort of addition to the world the Wachowski sisters built almost 20 years ago now.

And with the 20th anniversary of The Matrix having just past in March, there’s no better time to make the announcement. The trilogy is already returning to theaters for a limited time later this month, courtesy of Dolby Vision and Warner Bros., so why not make some new installments official as well?

As to what a spin-off or reboot would entail, there’s plenty of ground to cover. We could follow new characters before or after the first trilogy, or we could revisit the survivors of the original films. (After all, it’s not like Keanu Reeves has aged much.) Whatever story they tell, we’re just as excited about the possibility of new Matrix movies as Lilly — though we’re still a little skeptical that they could be better than the originals.
