The guys behind Into the Spider-Verse are making live-action Spider-Man shows

Earlier this year, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller entered into a deal with Sony Pictures Television, agreeing to create a series of shows focused on the Spider-Verse. But fans who were hoping to see Miles Morales’ stunning animated story continued on the small screen might be disappointed to hear that all of the Spider-Verse shows will be live-action affairs.

Lord and Miller, who had a huge hit with The LEGO Movie in 2014, haven’t revealed much about the upcoming shows, but Miller confirmed that they’ll be live-action while speaking with Deadline. He also explained that the shows will follow and include Sony’s Marvel characters, and while the shows will be related to one another, they’ll also each be a separate entity — much like Disney’s upcoming shows set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Basically, it looks like we’re going to get another Marvel cinematic universe, this one on TV, and this one populated by characters Disney itself can’t actually bring to the screen…except both studios can use Spider-Man. Things could get confusing.

“We are developing a handful of live-action shows using Sony’s Marvel characters, of which there are like 900 characters,” Miller said. “We’re figuring out a way to develop the shows so that each are their own unique experience but are also related.”

Apart from those details, Miller couldn’t say much else. According to him, the schedule for the shows should be fleshed out over the next few months — meaning more Spider-Verse information will be heading our way over the next year or so.

Whatever Miller and Lord decide to do with the projects, it’ll be interesting to see the Spider-Verse explored through several television series. There are so many characters and timelines to work with, and intertwining then all will likely be a challenge. Will we finally get to see Silk or Scarlet Spider grace our screens?

And the TV series aren’t all Spider-Man fans have to look forward to in the coming years. Although the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will likely have no connection to the upcoming television shows, a sequel to the movie is in the works.
