8. The Beltane festival

This shot of Yen coming up to Geralt while wearing a mask, set against the backdrop of a crazy medieval orgy, is likely a reference to a scene in Sword of Destiny. The tricky thing about including this scene in the trailer is that quite a bit happens in terms of Geralt and Yen’s relationship before this point. In fact, by the time of the Beltane masquerade, Geralt and Yen have already been together for a long stretch of time, and then separated. The masquerade is the first time they’ve seen each other in months, and serves as the setting for Geralt to finally start moving past how messed up he was emotionally from splitting with Yen in the first place.

As with so many of the other scenes, the show could handle this in a multitude of ways. Will they use it as a first meeting for Geralt and Yen? After all, to date no scenes or hints have been dropped about there being a djinn in the show (which is central to the short story where Geralt and Yen meet in the books). The show could go a different route. Or it could stay true to the source material and have this occur well into their relationship…but that would mean that they would need to cover quite a bit of ground for the show’s main romance in this first season.

No matter how you slice it, this presents a bit of a conundrum. The good thing is that it being included at all implies that we’ll get a pretty hefty dose of Geralt and Yen’s romance this season, and all the deep character development that entails.
